TFA adviser helps raise £1,049 for Cornwall’s Children’s Cancer Unit
Every year, children across Cornwall are diagnosed with cancer, with some spending days or weeks in hospital away from school, friends and the familiarity of home.
For our adviser Nicole Martin, supporting Cornwall’s Children’s Cancer Unit at the Royal Cornwall Hospital is a cause with a very personal connection.
Nicole’s daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma when she was just four weeks old. She underwent surgery and chemotherapy at both Bristol Children’s Hospital and the Royal Cornwall Hospital.
Having experienced first-hand the impact a childhood cancer diagnosis can have on the whole family, Nicole is passionate about raising awareness of childhood cancers and supporting the unit that cares for children and families in Cornwall.
Raising funds and awareness
As part of Children’s Cancer Awareness Month in September, Nicole and the community at Kea Primary School got involved in fundraising for Cornwall’s Children’s Cancer Unit, including a non-school-uniform day and cake sale.
Together, they raised an incredible £1,049 in 2026.
The funds raised for the Children’s Cancer Unit can help provide some of the important extras that make a difference to children and their families during treatment, including trips, music therapy, sibling support, family refreshments, gaming equipment and toys.
Making hospital feel a little more like home
In 2025, schools across Cornwall raised an incredible £15,000 for the cause, demonstrating what can be achieved when local communities come together.
While the clinical team provides the treatment and care children need, these additional funds can help make time spent in hospital more comfortable and create moments of enjoyment and normality for children and their families during an incredibly difficult period.
We’re very proud to see Nicole supporting a cause that means so much to her and her family, and helping to raise both funds and awareness within her local community.
A huge well done to Nicole, Kea Primary School and everyone who donated, baked, dressed down or otherwise supported the fundraising.
